Canada WOD 2009
The official celebration of the World Ostomy Day (WOD) will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia October 3, 2009.This event will be fun and enjoyable to everyone. There will be proclamation cutting of the ribbon before the WOD Walk in one of the beautiful park in Halifax. There will be entertainment, food and giving out educational leaflet about United Ostomy Association Canada UOAC), International Ostomy Association, Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada and programs associated with UOAC. Banner will be flagging, you will hear music everywhere. Everyone is welcome. Another event will be taking place is the 3 days Board of Directors (BOD) meeting of the UOAC. This makes the event more meaningful and complete. As the Chair of the WOD, I commend Joel Jacobson for his direction and coordination and the Halifax Metro Chapter members for their continued support in making this event possible. REACHING OUT is the WOD motto this year and the BOD of the UOAC is planning to make this happen. The plan is to visit a pediatric unit in one of the hospitals in Halifax. Doing this nice gesture hopeful to make sick children feel better and put a smile on their faces. In conjunction with the visit, the children will receive from the BOD a stuffed TEDDY BEAR from Avon Products and proceed will be given to the Cancer Breast Foundation. Another good activity for the BOD to involve is the presence of all of them at the Park and all requested to be known and be given 2 balloons. They will be instructed to hold the balloons until the count of 1, 2 and after 3 all the balloons will be up to the sky same time. Photo will be taken. From the Western Part of Canada, events are going on. In Okanagan BC, a 2 days Ostomy education seminar will be held. The Winnipeg Ostomy Association will be making 30 scarves for volunteer ostomates and will wearing the WOD pins to be known among the crowd while the event is underway. Saskatoon Chapter will be doing their celebration in their own merry way. In Edmonton Alberta fifty (50) members already signed for the event. Central part of Canada is not an exemption. Ostomy Toronto is planning a big celebration. In Ottawa, members and friends will meet at the "Eternal Flame" and participate in a walk-around the Parliament Hill carrying banners and wearing blue ribbons. This will be followed by a lunch at the famous Rideau Centre. In Quebec City, Quebec an education Ostomy seminar will take place and the Great Renaissance Comebacks sponsored by ConvaTec is the highlight. Gander NL, in the Eastern part of Canada is very busy since August. The Gander Chapter #9006 started a ticket sale ($ 1.00 each) - for a Filipino Embroidered table cloth (12 setting) for 3 weekends taken place at the Gander Mall. To date we sold 450 tickets and still selling fast. The draw will be October 3 and the winner to be announced after the WOD WALK. As an ET Nurse and President of the Gander Chapter, Delilah GUY set up a booth at the Gander Mall one Saturday. Delilah did an education session on ostomy and ostomy care and displayed different types of ostomy appliances and demonstrated on how it works to people who stopped by. There were approximately 500 people passed by with strange looks, some stopped some just grinned, some bought tickets and some made donations. Overall people when asked said: “it was informative and educational” Another event is the “WOD Bowlathon 2009” which will be held Sept 19, 2009. There will be guests including the Mayor of Gander & Medical Personnel cutting the Ribbon and will throw the first ball. There will be 8 trophies to be presented to the winners. There will be 30 Bowlers and they were required to have sponsors to serve as a fundraising event as well. Door prizes, food and music will be provided. Media will be involved for WOD promotion and awareness. The major big event will be the WOD WALK October 3, a half day affair. Again Politicians were already asked to participate. Proclamation will be held at the Town Hall by the Mayor of Gander September 28th. Cutting of the Ribbons, media coverage and possible interview are considered. Food, music will be provided. So far some of the events already happened and some is just a waiting time to come for the BIG 3 words WORLD OSTOMY DAY.
